The History of Sugnall Walled Kitchen Gardens.
It is likely that all gardens were previously enclosed for the protection from animal and human intruders. At Sugnall, the walled garden would have been built to shelter the garden from wind and frost and helps to raise the ambient temperate within the garden, creating a microclimate. This enables the growing season to be extended and also enables plants to flourish, which would otherwise not survive.
The walled garden was originally built to feed the occupants of Sugnall Hall. It is said that one acre should provide enough produce to feed twelve people throughout the year. The Sugnall Walled Garden extends to two acres and should therefore have the capacity to feed twenty four all year round.
The Georgian Walled Garden has provided the Estate with seasonal fresh produce and can be dated back to 1738. It briefly became a nursery from X to X but in XXXX Dr Jacques has lovingly restored the two acre walled garden to its former glory, boasting four quadrants with a more modern twist.
Two of the quadrants and the perimeter are in production, as they would have been in days gone by, providing the Tea Room and Sugnall Hall with fresh produce. The other two quadrants comprise one which is laid to hardstanding and lawn where you will often find the Runner Ducks enjoying some sunshine and the other, since 2012 has housed a summer marquee, nestled amongst a well tendered, floristic boarder.
